Simile
To show similarities between two different things, writers use a figure of speech known as a simile. The comparison is done so by using the words “like” or “as”. An example of a simile would be the phrase “cute as a kitten”. An individuals appearance is compared to the cuteness of a small kitten. "I was like the Arabian who had been buried with the dead and found a passage to life, aided only by one glimmering and seemingly ineffectual light.” This quote from Frankenstein depicts a simile. As a reader we understand that Victor is not an Arabian who was buried, although he is comparing the situation he is in to that of the Arabian. Another example would be the quote which describes the love Victor has for Caroline,"He came like a protecting spirit to the poor girl…”. Caroline's mother passed away and when her father also passed away it was Victor who took care of the young girl.
