The simple definition of a denouement is the resolution, or the final scene of a literary works. The denouement acts as the conclusion, which means that all conflicts are finally resolved and all questions are answered for the reader. A denouement can be characterized by either a happy or a sad ending, as long as all questions can be answered for the reader. Mary Shelly, the author of Frankenstein has a different understanding of what a denouement includes. The author simply concludes the novel by recognize all the deaths they have occurred and Victors promise to destroy Pieces. Not necessarily wrapping up the story to answer any questions the reader may have.
“The five characteristics of an epic are the inclusion of: supernatural forces interacting with humans; acts of courage or valor; characters who have some type of national importance; a tone and voice that make everything sound important, even if it's not; and a setting that is regional, national or global in nature.”
Examples of an epic would be the Iliad, Odyssey, and the Aeneid. Examples of these six characteristics can be found in the novel,Frankenstein. Supernatural forces are not directly indicated, however just the creation of Pieces would indicate that there are some forces working within this novel. In addition there are Instances which Victor Frankenstein calls to the spirits, which implies that he believes in such forces. The character of Victor Frankenstein displays valor and courage when he fights Pieces back and does not given to his requests. His strong willed character might have been the cause of many of the accidents which occurred, although without Frankenstein there would be no first hand experience to tell such a story. Frankenstein spent a great deal of time working on the monster but also fighting Pieces every step of the way. His presence within the literary work is very evident, as the reader goes through the journey with Frankenstein.
